Confluence brews the hand-crafted beer that Des Moines, Iowa, can call its own. If you savor beer as both a bold taste adventure in the present and a connection with generations past, Confluence Brewery was founded for you. We’re devoted to creating a confluence of great beer, good friends and wonderful times — and look forward to bringing you together with a pint very soon.

SERIES & SMALL BATCH BREWS

COOPERAGE

This series employs a variety of cooperage to elevate the spirit of our beer. We love exploring the sheer variety of spirit barrels and the flavors and aromas they can contribute to our beer. That’s why our cooperage program features a tremendous variety of barrels used, but also variety in types of beers that we age therein. From the “traditional” Bourbon Barrel Aged Stouts to the highly unusual Tequila Barrel Aged Pilsner, this series is a playground full of delightful and unexpected pairings to produce one of a kind beers.

BARREL O’ FUNKIES

This series works to harness the free spirited microbes that help make beer refreshingly sour, fantastically funky, and just plain fun. This is our playground for the microbes that help to create classically sour and wild ales. Here we let countless strains of Brettanomyces run wild so we can revel in all it’s fruity, musty and funky character. Here we let our Lactobacillus take its time in souring our beer to produce something just a little more complex than a kettle soured ale. Sometimes we let Pediococcus join in for even deeper acidity and flavor. Always aged in wood, some neutral, some spirit, some wine. Sometimes dry hopped, sometimes refermented over fruit or other adjuncts. Every beer is unique, but they all have a wild heart. So, if like us, you love the sour and the funk, then this is the series for you. 

 

EXTINCTION EVENT

Our ever-evolving answer to the shifting landscape of IPAs. The boom in craft beer has resulted in a corresponding boom in the hop industry, with new varieties of hops constantly hitting the market. This series is our chance to test them all out, and because we tell you on the can which hops we use, you can test them out right alongside us! Each malt bill is tweaked to showcase the hops in classic hazy IPA fashion, with a soft full bodied beer to back up all the fruity, juicy, resinous goodness the hop yards have to offer. Snag a 4 pack of each new batch and join us as we search for our next favorite hop or hop combination!

 

BATCH #

Big. Bold. Hazy Fun. What started as a celebration of our 1000 batch has become a series dedicated to the time honored tradition of overdoing it. Each batch is unique, but they all share a big sticky malt bill with a correspondingly high abv and a positively absurd amount of hops. Juicy, fruity, sweet, dank and heavy, each Batch beer is a perfect beer to celebrate a special occasion, or to make any occasion just a little more special.

 

THE WIZARD

A classic Leipziger-style Gose, with just a touch of magic, and often, a whole lotta fruit. There’s no denying how refreshing and delicious a nice clean tart beer can be. Thankfully, through the magic of kettle souring we can produce The Wizard quickly enough to make sure we always have some on hand whenever we get that sour craving! However, while it takes far less time to sour than the beers you’ll find in our Barrel O’ Funkies series, we promise we take no shortcuts in summoning forth the best Gose we can. No additional acid is added to our Wort in the boil kettle, which means all the bright sour acidity you taste is through the natural fermentation of our house strain of lactobacillus. Each batch of fruited Wizard receives all natural ingredients, no extracts, no flavorings, and when we can we eschew even natural concentrate and puree for 100% whole fruit. We just think natural whole fruit makes the best possible beer. We don’t skimp on that fruit either, with most batches sitting on two or more pounds of fruit per gallon of beer for over a month prior to packaging. This enables us to package the cleanest beer with the deepest fruit flavor and best shelf stability possible, short of running it through a pasteurizer anyway! Look for The Wizard year round, and his fruited variants throughout the warmer months of the year.

From day one we’ve wanted to produce beer that our city could be proud to call its own, because we are so proud to call Des Moines our home. This town has given us so much love, support and encouragement that we’ve been able to grow and realize our dreams. The Local Cause is a chance for us to give back to the community that has given us so much. We pair with a like minded local business to donate 100% of the  profits, matched by our business partner, from a one off beer brewed specifically to bring awareness to people and areas of need in our community.
